Number of violent water-related incidents rises dramatically

The number of violent incidents linked to water resources around the world has increased dramatically in recent years, according to a new study released this morning by the Pacific Institute.

Created by the Pacific Institute in the 1980s, it includes all known verified instances where water and water systems (1) trigger conflicts; (2) are used as weapons in conflicts; or (3) are targets or casualties of violence.

Water-related violence has been rising steadily since 2000 but has surged in recent years according to the Pacific Institute’s Water Conflict Chronology.
